THE LAMPLIGHTER

ST. PAUL'S  LUTHERAN CHURCH   MISSOURI  SYNOD                                                       APRIL  2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Pastor’s Desk:

The prophet Isaiah writes of Jesus:  “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.  Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.  But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.  We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:3-6).

These words tell us five things.  First, they tell us what was done to Jesus by men (He was despised and rejected)Secondly, they tell us what Jesus did for men (He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows). Third, they tell us what was done to Jesus by God (He was stricken, smitten, and afflicted)Fourth, they tell us why all this happened (He was pierced for our transgression and He was crushed for our iniquities).  And lastly, they tell us the end result of all this (by His wounds we are healed).

As I write this article, we are in the midst of the Lenten season (and looking forward to the celebration of Easter!).  During the month of April, you are encouraged to ponder our Lord’s passion – and to celebrate His resurrection.  Following is the schedule of worship services for Holy Week and Easter:  I invite you to join me in giving thanks and praise to Jesus at the following:

April 1 (Sun.) 8:15 a.m.        Palm Sunday Worship

April 1 (Sun.) 10:30 a.m.      Palm Sunday Worship

April 5 (Thur.) 8:00 p.m.      Maundy Thursday Worship (Holy Communion)

April 6 (Fri.)  8:00 p.m.        Good Friday Worship

April 8 (Sun.) 7:00 a.m.        Easter SONrise worship (Holy Communion)

April 8 (Sun). 10:00 a.m.      Easter Worship (Holy Communion)

The Maundy Thursday service will include a reenactment of Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper and will be followed by a time of fellowship.  The two Easter services are different, and they will each have a different sermon (I hope!).  You are also invited to join us for breakfast Easter morning, which will be served by the youth from 7:45-8:45 a.m.

Speaking of invitations, you are also invited to join us for a special service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13, as we examine our catechumens.  And then we also invite you to celebrate the rite of confirmation in our 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday, April 15.  That service will include a celebration of the Lord’s Supper.

As we approach the end of the Lenten season, keep your eyes on the cross … and the empty tomb!  And remember … “I know that my Redeemer lives . . .” (Job 19:25).

Eagerly anticipating the celebration of Easter!

Pastor Rick Kanoy

SPECIAL NOTE!
Support Claude and Rhoda Hogue, our missionaries serving in East Africa, with your prayers and offerings.  Place your contributions in a personal envelope designated for HOUGE MISSION PROJECT with your name on it.  This especially helps when there are cash gifts to be included on your Contributor Reporting Summary.  You may place this envelope in the offering plate.

“Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs”
(Psalm 100:2).  At 10:30 every Sunday morning, we “worship the Lord with gladness” as we “come before Him with joyful songs.”  What happens at these worship services?  At these worship services, we sing.  We confess our sins.  We receive God’s forgiveness.  We study His Word.  We confess our faith.  We pray.  And we receive Holy Communion.  Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us for this special time of worship!

GOD AT WORK
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

He is risen! Halleluiah!

Surely, we are blessed. God is a good and gracious God that we should give all praise and honor to. Jesus taught, “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20). Do not forget that through prayer and faith, we can do anything through our Lord Jesus Christ. Please pray for the Campaign and thank the Lord for all he has already given us in reaching our goal. You can monitor our goal on the Capital Campaign vine located in the Narthex. Like the coming of spring, it continues to grow! Thanks be to God!

“By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name” (Hebrews 13:15)

Yours in Christ,

The Capital Campaign Follow-up Committee

PRESS ON TOWARD THE GOAL – RUN THE RACE!

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 3:14
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”  Hebrews 12:1b -2

 Out of the mouths…
For National Lutheran Schools’ Week, I asked the students how they felt about their school.  They used computer class time to write their responses and I posted them in the fellowship hall. They all agreed that one of the best things about our school is lunch!  And it is true – Lori Wolf takes great pride and care in providing our children with a tasty meal every noon.  Thank you, Lori, for taking such good care of our students!  Here is a sampling of what the students wrote about being at
St. Paul’s:

MACY ROSENTHAL, grade 1:  My school is great because I like our mascot and my friends go to this school to.  I love my Jesus.  Me and my friends like to JUMPROPE!

JAKE KORUS, grade 5:  My school is great because we have awesome lunches. I like my school because it is small so we get personal attention and help in subjects.  But the main reason our school is great because we can get a Christian education.

MADELINE VOLK, grade 7:  I like my school because of the small class sizes.  I know everybody’s name, and we have a lot of inside jokes. The best part of St. Paul’s Lutheran School is the ability to pray in public, food, and inside jokes.

SAIGE JUHNKE, grade 4:  My school is great because of the teachers.  I like my school because we get to learn about God.  My friends and I like to jump rope.  At recess if it is cold I like to play in the snow and when it is warm we play tag on the equipment.

TIFFANI TOEBBEN, grade 6: One of the reasons I like my school is because we have great lunches.  Another reason I like school is because I have really great and very close friends.  The last thing I like about St. Paul’s is that we can lean about JESUS.  We can talk about JESUS and pray at lunch time. These are the reasons I like my school and hope to never leave.

AARON DOLL, grade 5:   My school is great because we get to learn about Jesus every day.  My friends and I like to play sports together, especially go on sports trips like to Seward.  I also like my school because I get to learn about some of my favorite subjects like math, science, and social studies.

MICHAEL DOLL, grade 5:  My school is great because it teaches about God, the lunches are good, and because we always do fun things when it is National Lutheran Schools Week.  I like math because we learn about things we will use when we are older, and I like science because we lean about things in the world.

HANNAH HILGENKAMP, grade 2: My school is great because we have track and field day.  I like my school because we have math.  My friends and I like to talk.

BAILEY ANDERSEN, grade 1:  My school is great because it is fun. I like my school because everybody is nice.  My friends and I like to have a lot of fun.

BRIANNA DUNLAU, grade 5:  My school is great because we learn about Jesus every day. On Wednesday chapel is always fun! When I played volleyball here, I had a very fun time. Our team had very good sportsmanship, also.

KINDERGARTENERS: This class likes “Sharing time, computer class, and Jesus time.”

JONAH KANOY, grade 2:  My school is great because we learn about Jesus!  I like my school because the teachers are great!  My friends and I like to play UNO!

CATIE THEILER, grade 4:  My school is great because we have fun learning.  I like my school because we get to learn about Jesus.  My friends and I like to play basketball and volleyball.  It is fun to read the Bible at school.

Obviously, the kids “get it”!  We thank our dedicated Christian teachers – Kathy, Joyce, Dana, Carol, and Jennifer for transforming lives for Christ!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTER NEWS:
Spring has sprung at Preschool! How exciting it is to see all the new life God brings in springtime! A new season and a new month bring the color yellow, the number 8, and the oval shape. Our units for April will be “Easter, Bunches of Bunnies, Rain Drops, Seeds Galore, Nature, Creepy Crawlers, Feathered Friend, and Life in the Ocean” Our Jesus Time will continue to focus on the glorious story of our Risen Lord. What a blessing it is to teach in a Lutheran School where I can share so many of the wonderful stories of our Savior with such eager listeners. Thank you for your continued prayers and support for our school. We pray you have a Blessed Easter and a Happy Spring!
In His Service,
Mrs. Oerman

KINDERGARTEN NEWS:
With the arrival of spring a couple of weeks ago, these students are now excited for Easter!  We'll be doing many language arts and math activities related to Easter.  After dealing with the story of the painful death of Jesus on Good Friday, we'll rejoice at the news of Easter morning.  These children are continuing down the road of reading and what fine progress they're making!  That at-home practice is such a boost to their progress along with the in-school practice.

5TH & 6TH GRADE NEWS:
On March 15, 6th graders Tiffani Toebben and Hannah Long (alternate – Jason Carper), and 5th graders Michael Doll and Brianna Dunklau (alternate Aaron Doll) represented our class in the Elkhorn Valley Spelling Bee.  We’re very proud of these students.  We’ve finished studying the Revolutionary War in history and have been working on the making of the Constitution and the 3 branches of our government.  In religion class, we finished studying the passion of our Lord as taught in Matthew.  In April, we will continue with the parables that Jesus taught His disciples.  Please join us to worship on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Just as the women ran to tell the disciples of the empty tomb, may we also run to others telling them the Good News of His death and resurrection!
Mrs. Webinger

7TH GRADE NEWS:
Our class has done a lot of competing in the last month. Jason and Taylor represented St. Paul’s at the Concordia Basketball Tournament in Seward; Madeline, Emily, Jason, and Coleton participated in the EVSA Spelling Bee; Emily participated in the Geography Bee locally and at State competition; Madeline, Emily, and Coleton competed in the online News bowl competition.  Now we are preparing for the upcoming Field Day in May, at West Point.  Good job class!
